Guanella Pass
Scott Baily
Twelve people in 3 cars attended this trip to Clear Creek County. We
found about a dozen rosy finches in Silverplume, mostly Gray-crowned Rosy
Finch and one Brown-capped Rosy Finch. Some trip members reported seeing a
Black Rosy Finch. We reached Guanella pass around 11:30 am. The
temperature was in the low 20s, and wind guests over 20 MPH made it pretty
chilly. We were fortunate to find a group of about 10 White-tailed
Ptarmigan (a few flushed) within 150 yards of the parking area! We had
excellent views of several birds. Though we didn't have to go far, snow
shoes were a real help. We were unable to find Three-toed Woodpeckers
below the pass. Leader: Scott Baily.
