Larimer County Lakes and Reservoirs

Doug Faulkner led nine participants to several Larimer County lakes and
reservoirs in search of rare migrant jaegers. Sites visited between 8 am
and 5 pm on October 20 included: Strauss Cabin Lake, N. Poudre Reservoir
No. 3, Wellington Reservoir No. 4, Douglas Reservoir, Windsor Reservoir,
Elder Reservoir, Annex No. 8, Long Pond, Dixon Reservoir, Hamilton
Reservoir at Rawhide Powerplant (no access allowed, it is off-limits
indefinitely), and Lake Loveland. Below is the species list (65 species)
with numbers for most species and location.
Common Loon - 1 Lake Loveland
Pied-billed Grebe - 8 singles or pairs at multiple locations
Horned Grebe - 12 (4 Lake Loveland, 4 Douglas Res.)
Eared Grebe - 30+ (9 Wellington Res. No. 4)
Western Grebe - 300 (230 Lake Loveland)
Clark's Grebe - 1 Lake Loveland
American White Pelican - 18 (15 N. Poudre Res. No. 3)
Double-crested Cormorant - 25
Great Blue Heron - 11 (7 N. Poudre Res. No. 3)
Canada Goose
Gadwall - 110 multiple reservoirs
American Wigeon - second most numerous duck species
Mallard - most numerous duck species
Northern Shoveler - only one found for the day was at Windsor Res.
Northern Pintail - 6 N. Poudre Res. No. 3
Green-winged Teal - 50 (35 Elder Res.)
Canvasback - 50+ multiple reservoirs
Redhead - 50+ multiple reservoirs
Lesser Scaup - 10 all at Long Pond
Bufflehead - 8 (4 N. Poudre Res. No. 3)
Hooded Merganser - 3 pairs at N. Poudre Res. No. 3
