Field Trip Report

Sunday October 21, 2001
IBA Survey

On Sunday Oct 21, Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory members joined Fort Collins Audubon Society volunteers in the first Fossil Creek Reservoir IBA (Important Bird Area) bird survey. The count began at 7 am with two observers counting blackbirds as they left the communal roost in the cattail reeds west of the reservoir. Then from 8:30 to 1:00 pm, 6 observers walked a roadside and fence line transect about 3 miles long, counting birds along the way. The route began on Timberline Road overlooking the Fossil Creek Natural Area, passed Duck Lake, and then followed the boundary of newly acquired Larimer County property, along the southern shore of the reservoir. The weather cooperated and the most interesting birds were 5 Ferruginous Hawks, 3 Great-tailed Grackles and a Semipalmated Plover. Over 10,000 birds were tallied, representing 64 species. A full report will be prepared at a later date, probably in conjunction with other future surveys at the site. The details of future survey work are still being worked out.
