Field Trip Report

Saturday Feb 2, 2002
Fort Collins Area Birding

Feb. 2, 2002
Fort Collins Area Birding, all day.

The weather was perfect and the company was excellent (16 participants).  The best birds of the day were seen in the afternoon. We visited Grandview Cemetery, City Park, Long Pond, the Poudre River corridor, Watson Lake, Wellington SWA, and some assorted other spots.

Here are the highlights:
-Good diversity of ducks (both dabblers and divers) at City Park Lake and
near the Poudre River.
-Golden Eagles (we watched the pair at Watson lake copulate!)
-Northern Pygmy-owl 1 in the foothills west of La Porte; absolutely spectacular looks at this bird!
-Great Horned Owl 1 on nest on the CSU campus
-Short-eared Owl 1 at Wellington SWA
-Northern Shrike 1 at Wellington SWA
-American Dipper 1 where the Poudre crosses the paved road near the entrance to Watson Lake
