Owl Prowl

Owl Prowl Report, Feb 23.

A large group (37 participants in 9 vehicles) searched unsuccessfully for Northern Pygmy Owl in Rist Canyon, Eastern Screech-Owl at Heritage Park (Fort Collins), as well as Barn, Short-eared and Long-eared Owls in the Wellington Area. However three Great Horned Owls were spotted, although only one afforded excellent views. This was the first wild owl seen by several of the group!

After dark, a smaller group (15 participants in 4 vehicles) met at 8:45 pm to venture up the Poudre Canyon to Cameron Pass in search of the elusive Boreal Owl. In spite of decent weather conditions and almost 2 hrs of searching at 10 spots along the road above 9000 feet, we never heard any Boreal Owls. We returned to Fort Collins at about 1:30 am.

In all, 39 participants prowled for owls, but only one Great Horned Owl came out for a good view of the owlers!
