Field Trip Report
October 27, 2002
Larimer Lakes
We visited 16 lakes in eastern Larimer County (see list below).
Overall, 70 species of birds were observed. The dominant waterfowl were
Redhead (approximately 1000 birds), American Wigeon (500), Gadwall (400),
Common Merganser (350), and Canada Goose (300). Other highlights included:
Blue-winged Teal- 2 at Smith Lake
Northern Shrike-1 at Smith Lake
Greater Yellowlegs-10 at Smith Lake and N. Poudre Res. #3
Black-bellied Plover-1 calling at N. Poudre Res. #3
Greater Scaup - 9 at N. Poudre Res. #3
Baird's Sandpiper-3 at Bee Reservoir
Harlan's Hawk-1 at Windsor Reservoir Annex #8
EASTERN PHEOBE- 1 imm. near Horseshoe Lake, Loveland
Long-billed Dowitcher -3 at Horseshoe Lake
Eurasian Collared-Dove - 30 at #620 CR12 (south of Loveland)
Steller's Jay-3 (along CR23 southwest of Loveland, several miles from
usual haunts in foothills)
Common Loon-1 at Lonetree Reservoir
Bonaparte's Gull-45, at 4 lakes, mostly at Lake Loveland
