FORT COLLINS AUDUBON SOCIETY BOARD MEETING
Minutes for August 26, 1999
Next board meeting: October 7th
MEMBERS PRESENT: Sue Kenney, Bill Miller, Linda McNamara, Kathleen Tracy,
Dale Agger, Scott Baily, Jackie Boss, Jon Burch, Ron Harden, Joel Hurmence,
Cynthia Melcher, Barb Turnbull, John Waddell
NEW BUSINESS:
- Susan Kirkpatrick, Executive Director of the Colorado State Office, joined the
meeting to offer ideas on chapter planning. Susan recently worked with the
Greeley and Denver chapters on their planning initiatives. The FCAS board
decided to hold a three-hour strategic planning session on a Saturday in
October. The planning session will be open to all board members who want to
attend. To make the most of the time, members will do brainstorming via e-mail
prior to the planning session.
- The FCAS board adopted the following as its mission statement: "The
mission of Fort Collins Audubon Society is to promote the appreciation,
conservation and restoration of ecosystems, focusing on birds and other
wildlife, through education, participation, stewardship and advocacy."
- FCAS formally endorsed the Help Preserve Open Space initiative. McNamara will
write a letter to the editor of the Coloradoan indicating the chapter's
endorsement. The election is November 3rd.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
PRESIDENT:
- Kenney asked that the field trip and program chairs provide her with
attendance counts.
- Wild Birds Unlimited is under new management and was looking for ways to get
involved with the chapter. The board agreed that placement of FCAS materials at
the store would be appropriate. This will include brochures, checklists, and a
(yet to be developed by Agger) safe bird feeding handout.
- The board also decided to have the field trip coordinator give out
complimentary FCAS brochures and checklists to field trip participants.
- The revisions to the by-laws are complete. A notice will be put in the October
newsletter with discussion planned for the November meeting.
- Kenney noted that two areas have been identified for submission to the IBA
Program. One is the Fossil Creek Reservoir, Duck Lake and Associated Areas and
the other consists of the prairie dog colonies along the Front Range. These
areas were selected in part because of the data available. Rick Schroeder had
access to and compiled the Fossil Creek information and data from the city's
annual raptor survey will be used as documentation for the prairie dog colonies.
- FCAS will have a booth at the Poudre Riverfest on September 18th. Tracy is
going to redo the display prior to that. Bill Miller and Barb Turnbull will man
the FCAS display at the event.
- The Natural Area Cleanup is set for September 25th, 9-12 at Fossil Creak. Come
at 8am to bird first.
CONSERVATION: Bill Miller noted that he represent FCAS on the Northern Colorado
Alliance, which is an information sharing effort, not a formal organization.
Miller will send out the Web address for those who want more information. Miller
noted that FCAS could also post information to their Web site. The alliance is
currently working on a project referred to as "June Rise" which is an
effort to raise funds for a paid environmental advocate in Northern Colorado.
They are seeking 200 individuals, with a recommended contribution from each of
$17/month for two years.
CAC: As a CAC member, Ron Harden is on the nominating committee for Audubon
Colorado. Harden is soliciting names of individuals to be nominated for board
members for the state chapter. FCAS will have one member on the board, but
Harden is looking for people who could serve as board members at large.
Addendum to May minutes: Louise Creager is the new Education Chair.
