FORT COLLINS AUDUBON SOCIETY BOARD
MEETING
Minutes for January 21, 1999 (revised
3/1/99 after feedback)
MEMBERS PRESENT: Sue Kenney, Bill Miller, Linda McNamara, Kathleen Tracy,
Dale Agger, Scott Baily, Chris Dietrich, Janet Gallenstein, Ron Harden, Rick
Harness, Joel Hermance, Rick Schroeder, Barb Turnbull, John Wadell
NEW BUSINESS
AVIAN APPRECIATION DAYS: FC Audubon will again have a booth at Bath Nursery's
annual Avian Appreciation Days on Jan 23rd and 24th. Avian Appreciation Days
focuses primarily on pet birds, but many nature groups are represented. A
sign-up sheet was passed around at the board meeting.
LARIMER COUNTY BIRD LIST: This list is now available and Rick Schroeder has a
stack of copies to distribute when Audubon sets up a booth or to distribute at
field trips. Joel Hurmence is making some minor revisions to the list, but we
will use the copies we have printed until they run out. There was a discussion
about whether or not to charge for the lists and it was decided to distribute
them free for now.
DONATIONS: Sue Kenney asked the group to consider whether or not we wanted to
put a donation box at program meetings or at our booth when we participate at
events. After some discussion the board decided not to do so. The feeling was to
keep fund raising to one major event (the birdathon). Since the board had a
small surplus of funds, Rich Harness suggested that Audubon might want to
consider donating to the Rocky Mountain Raptor Assoc. during their annual fund
raiser in February.
BOARD MEETING DATES: The next meeting will be February 11 at 6:30 in the Lincoln
Center, prior to the February
program meeting. The March board meeting will be March 4th at 7:00 in the Seed
Storage Building.
ADOPT A NATURAL AREA: Sue Kenney noted that the City of Fort Collins is starting
an "Adopt a Natural Area" program. She asked if FC Audubon would like
to be involved and the board approved. Sue will start an application for us.
There will be no signs for groups as there is with the highway program (a
decision by the city).
BY-LAWS: Bill Miller passed out a draft of the revised FC Audubon by-laws. All
members are asked to review them and get feedback to Bill or bring suggestions
to the next board meeting. A by-laws working group was formed and includes Bill
Miller, Rick Schroeder, Janet Gallenstein, and Dale Agger. Bill will send a copy
to those absent from the meeting.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
PRESIDENT: Sue is looking for copies of the following from the past two years to
complete the master file: the newsletter, copies of the minutes (Rick will get),
and treasurer's reports (Kathleen will get).
TREASURER: Kathleen Tracy distributed copies of the Treasurer's report. Funds
available for 1999 regular operations are $3,073. Rick Harness discussed the
fund raising efforts of the Raptor Protection Video Group. The board approved
holding the money in escrow for now. Rick will be looking into getting a
nonprofit account of their own and will report back at some future meeting.
SECRETARY: Linda McNamara recommended distributing the minutes via e-mail, yet
make a hard copy available at board meetings for those who don't have e-mail
accounts. The board approved.
PROGRAMS: Janet Gallenstein discussed the programs scheduled for February and
March.
FIELD TRIPS: Scott Baily will meet with Sue Kenney to take over planning for
future field trips. Sue recommended that we keep a record of the number of
people who participate. Someone suggested that a May field trip could be popular
one is usually not scheduled because the birdathon also happens in May. Sue
noted that the members like to know well in advance (3 months) about trips that
are planned.
HOSPITALITY: The board decided to have name tags available for program meetings
(and field trips?). Barb will work with Kathleen to get these. The group decided
that a slight rearranging of the tables in the Lincoln Center room may help with
the congestion at the entrance.
EDUCATION: Rick Schroeder reported that the Audubon Adventures program for
public school is the main education
activity. Currently six schools participate, including one home school program.
Rick indicated he would like to resign as education chair and will announce the
opening in Ptarmigan.
BIRDATHON: The birdathon will be held May 15th this year.
MEMBERSHIP: Dale noted that any membership application form needs to have our
Chapter number on it (D06) for
our Chapter to benefit from the dues. And the number must be in the lower right
had corner. Kenney asked the group to clarify our policy on "newsletter
only" applications. Individuals can request to get a newsletter only
subscription (not
membership) for one year for $15.00. After one year, the individual needs to
Join as a full Audubon member. This option is not promoted because we want to
encourage individuals to join the group as a full member.
EDITOR: To make sure that members get their newsletter on time, the date for
article submission has been moved up. Articles for the newsletter will now be
due the date of the program (2nd Thurs of the month) for the following month's
Ptarmigan.
POPULATION AND HABITAT: Chris Deitrich will review the materials and bring
forward some ideas on what else the chapter could do.
CONSERVATION and CAC: The chapter could apply for project funding, but because
of the short deadline (Feb 1st), the board agreed we would not submit anything
this year. Last year Rick Schroeder was able to get funding for our display
board and the display materials. The board moved to be sure this gets added to a
future agenda to be ready for next year.
Ron Harden noted that the League of Conservation Voters could supply the chapter
with membership list enhancement (i.e. add gender, age, etc.) for no fee, but
that it had to be requested by the first week in February. Otherwise the next
opportunity was 2 years out. By doing so, the chapter enters into a formal
agreement with the League and the League can NOT distribute the membership
enhancement list to any one else. After some lively discussion, the board
approved getting the list with no immediate plans to use it.
