2008 Invasive Weed Education Program

Saguache County

9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Enjoy a fun and educational day learning about the effects of noxious weeds on the environment.  In the first hour, you’ll learn how to identify, control, and eradicate these harmful weeds before they spread.  Then, under supervision, the weed pulling will commence!  Following the weed pull, you’ll enjoy lunch and a discussion on re-vegetation.

Bear Creek Lake Park Event

This noxious weed awareness event offers an exceptional opportunity for the community to get involved in helping protect our open spaces and natural resources against invasive species.  Help celebrate and protect our State’s unique resources and initiate or continue to be part of this important and greatly needed weed fighting force.

Come learn to identify and control several noxious weeds that are negatively impacting our State including this special place called Bear Creek Lake Park.  Enjoy it with friends, family or on your own.

Food, beverages and free entrance to the park are provided along with entertainment.

Carbondale Mid-Valley Weed Walk

July 12, 2008

11:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Spend the day learning how to stop the spread of noxious weeds.  During a guided weed walk, you’ll learn to identify invasive species in various habitats common to the mid-valley area. You’ll also learn about alternatives to common invasive perennials and bedding plants found in the home garden.  Later in the day, you’ll have an opportunity to participate in a weed pull followed by a barbeque.

Caring for Our Natural Resources – Pulling 4 Colorado

Cherry Creek Stewardship Partners – Outdoor Stewardship Institute Pulling Together 2008

City of Leadville - Weeds at 10, 000 Feet

EstesPark Weed Roundup – Pull for Colorado

Estes Park Weed Roundup - Pulling for Colorado

Town Dump/Recycle Center, 666 Elm Road

From Hwy 34/36 intersection, take Moraine Ave/Hwy 36 for 1.2 miles towards Rocky Mountain National Park, then turn right on Elm Road.  

Round up your family and friends and join us for a weed roundup and day of fun! Through educational booths, demonstrations, and hands-on instruction, you'll learn how to identify and effectively remove noxious and invasive weeds before they spread.  

Also, bring in your bags of pulled weeds to the event for free disposal, and the first 100 people to bring in at least one full trash bag of weeds gets a free "Pulling for Colorado" weed t-shirt (kid sizes too!!). 

Prizes will be awarded to those that bring in the most bags of weeds and the biggest weed specimens. There will also be prizes for anyone that can correctly identify all 10 live weed samples on hand. 

Free food and drink will be provided by local restaurants including Ed's Cantina, Poppy's Pizza and Grill, Big Horn Restaurant, and the Other Side Restaurant. 

This event will also kick off the establishment of a new free weed dump site sponsored by the Town of Estes Park. No bags of non-weed materials will be accepted. This event is sponsored by Pulling For Colorado, the Estes Land Stewardship Association, Larimer County , and the Town of Estes Park. 

All ages welcome, no limit to participants

Idaho Springs Weed Education Outreach

Community Weed Awareness Campaign volunteers will staff a table outside the Idaho Springs Safeway with samples of noxious weeds found in IdahoSprings and neighboring areas. Through newspaper announcements, the public is invited to bring plants for identification and control information. This outreach reaches both those interested enough to bring plant samples and those stopping by the grocery store.

James Peak Adopt-a-Habitat

For the fifth consecutive year, Gilpin County, the US Forest Service, and VOC are again honoring the spirit of botanist James by “pulling together” to address the oxeye daisy at the gateway to the James Peak Wilderness at the East Portal of the Moffat Tunnel.

Play a valuable role in protecting Colorado’s native plants.  Volunteer to spend a half-day removing oxeye daisy by hand and trowel.  Help keep the James Peak Wilderness wild!

Noxious Weed Intolerance Day

Learn to identify a variety of noxious weeds and foster teamwork in your community by participating in one of three concurrent events being held by each of the three municipalities in Pitkin County.  Each event will consist of a noxious weed tour, community weed pull, ID contest (with prizes!) and a barbeque.

Poudre Wilderness Volunteers – Invasive Weed Training

Jacks Gulch Campground & Lower Poudre River Canyon, LarimerCounty

May – August 2008

Since 1996, Poudre Wilderness Volunteers have served as stewards to the trail system in the Canyon Lakes Ranger District of the Roosevelt National Forest.  This summer, PWV will work to reduce the spread of noxious weeds.  All PWV members will be trained to identify five species of noxious weeds, report on their locations, respond appropriately, and educate the public regarding these weeds.  In addition, the PWV Weed Crew will be trained to do the same with 22 target weeds.  Crew members will also pull and spray infestations of four target weeds.  Way to go PWV!

Pulling for Prairie Preservation

Non-native plants area a HUGE problem right here in Douglas County!  These weeds aggressively invade grasslands devastating native plant populations, in turn degrading wildlife habitat and the health of prairie ecosystems.  They can also lead to the financial ruin of farmers and ranchers by transforming once valuable property to waste land.  Join together with park rangers and fellow concerned citizens in the urgent quest to remove Plumeless Thistle, (ob)noxious weed, from Roxborough State Park. 

Lunch will be provided.  Please bring water, sunscreen, a hat and a snack.

Roxborough has partnered with Pulling for Colorado and Olive Garden to make this important project happen.

Weed Warrior Days at the AudubonCenter

Chatfield State Park

Help eradicate noxious weeds by becoming a volunteer Weed Warrior!  At the Audubon Center, your morning will begin with an orientation on noxious weeds and hands-on tutorials on identification and removal of these weeds.  Then, armed with the necessary knowledge and tools, you’ll manually remove harmful weeds.  Refreshments will be served to all Weed Warriors.

Limited to 40 participants each day, ages 8 – adult
