Tuesdays 1:00 - 3:00 PM

The Aborigines of Australia have existed with little change over a period of 40,000 years making them one of the oldest of the world's pre-modern societies. They perfected a lifestyle uniquely suited to their hostile environment. In recent years, they have begun to be recognized for their special characteristics and for their civilization which is different from ours but valuable.
To fully understand the culture of these people, one must first examine their homeland. We will begin our  study by looking at the geological changes that created the continent of Australia.
Although we will examine the conditions in England and the prevailing philosophical theories that led to its settlement as a penal colony, we will devote most of our time to the Aborigines.  We will delve into their Dreamtime; their spiritual beliefs; the laws which enabled them to survive as nomadic wanderers; the technology of fire and their relationship to nature and their land.  We will enhance the discussion of their totemism and magic and the beauty of their art with the use of  film.
We will explore the clash between the convict population sent there by the British and the Aborigines. Our study will conclude with an assessment of the current situation between the Native Tribes, the settlers and the Government of the Territory.
Because many books are available in local libraries, no text will be required but a reading list will be available to help in locating subject material.   Participants who have visited or lived in Australia will be encouraged to relate their own experiences there.
