FORT COLLINS - More than 100 Fort Collins-area non-profits have saved hundreds--even thousands--of dollars by teaming with FortNet to have their web pages designed and produced for free.

FortNet (www.fortnet.org), a non-profit organization working to inform and educate the Fort Collins community about the Internet, recently reached it's first milestone--creating and maintaining websites for 100 local non-profits. Among the well-known organizations helped are Respite Care, Poudre Landmark Foundation and the Larimer County Food Distribution Center. The free web-page design and maintenance service is not available to for-profit businesses.

"FortNet wants to help non-profits maintain their focus on serving citizens in our community," said Neil Allen, FortNet executive director. "Because website design and maintenance can cost several hundred or thousands of dollars each year--costs outside the reach of many non-profits--FortNet knows many can't use the web in a beneficial way."

"But if FortNet assumes the time and effort needed to create and maintain a non-profit's website, then it saves the organization time and money, and allows it to maintain its focus on helping our community."

Allen noted FortNet volunteers who design the web pages are eager to partner with more non-profits to get information on line.

"Our goal is to build a 'virtual' Fort Collins community on the Internet," he added. "One way we can do this is to help as many non-profits establish an Internet presence. Fort Collins has a strong history of supporting the non-profit community. That support, FortNet believes, can extend to the Internet as well."

Since its inception in 1994, FortNet has served as the local leader in building Fort Collins' presence on the Internet and the community's understanding of Internet technologies. FortNet's services include a comprehensive community-information website, free monthly Internet classes, free Community Access Center with computers linked to the Internet for public use, annual Community Internet Festival that draws more than 1,000 participants and much more.

Non-profits interested in learning more about FortNet's free web-page design can call FortNet at 224-5991. Individuals or organizations that want to donate services or resources to FortNet should contact Allen at 224-5991 or via e-mail at nallen@fortnet.org.
