The array of services available to consumers is directly responsive to the specific and unique needs of persons with disabilities. Services provided emphasize three major areas of impact; advocacy, awareness, and access as it relates to disabled people leading dignified, productive lives that maximize their independence and equal participation in society. Because it is typical for agency clients to have multiple needs, case managers assist in the services provision process by monitoring caseload activities including achievement of independent living plan goals.
Part of Disabled Resource Service's (DRS) uniqueness as a center for independent living is that it is committed to hiring qualified disabled people to fill staffing positions. Employees with disabilities represent 50% of the staff's composition and they function as peer counselors by drawing from their specific disability-related vantage point when interacting with clients. This is valuable in building trust, rapport, and shared knowledge of life experiences with clients. Although DRS maintains two major service categories, e.g., Case Management and Community Awareness and Response, these services are flexible to match the individualized needs of each client since one prescribed method of service delivery does not work for everyone.
