September 12 "The House We Live In" with John Kefalas
"The House We Live In" uncovers how the concept of race resides not in nature but in politics,
economics and culture. It reveals how our social institutions "make" race by disproportionately
channeling resources, power, status and wealth to the white population.
September 19 "The Road to Brown" with Liza Rognas, Evergreen State College,
Olympia, WA
"The Road to Brown" tells the story of the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling as the culmination
of a brilliant legal assault on segregation that launched the Civil Rights movement
October 3 "In Whose Honor?" with Roe Bubar, Colorado State University
"In Whose Honor?" takes a critical look at the long-running practice of “honoring” American Indians
by making them mascots in sports. This documentary examines the issues of race, stereotypes, minority
misrepresentation and the powerful effects of mass-media imagery.
October 10 "Zoot Suit" with Kim Salinas, attorney and member of Fuerza Latina.
Zoot Suit explores the trial of four Chicano men accused of murder in Los Angeles in 1943. Their
conviction, which was eventually overturned, led to riots in the city and revealed the unfairness
of a criminal justice system influenced by racial prejudice.
