Seek
a Miracle (SAM) is a foundation under the auspices of the Muscular Dystrophy
Association. Funds raised for Seek A Miracle are used strictly for
Friedreich’s ataxia research. SAM was founded by Rochelle Litke in 1995
in honor of her daughter, Samantha, who had been diagnosed with Friedreich’s.
Sadly, Rochelle passed away in December, 2004. Rochelle, who was a strong presence in the Friedreich’s
ataxia community, will be greatly missed by many. Our
SAM/MDA family of "Miracle Seekers" has grown in the last 10 years to
many throughout the United States who help raise the much needed money for the
"Miracle". Since its
inception in 1995, Seek A Miracle has funded 1.3 million dollars worth of
scientific grants (as of 12/04). Over
the past few years, FARA
(Friedreich’s Ataxia Research
Alliance) and SAM/MDA have established an arrangement whereby we draw from the
resources of both our organizations to award peer-reviewed grants to scientists
working toward treatments/cures for Friedreich’s ataxia. Many of our grants
are co-funded by the two organizations. For more information, to hold a fundraising event or to make a donation contact: Marilyn or Terry Downing
