MDA GREAT WALK A GREAT SUCCESS THANKS TO TEAM LAURA!

All 42 members of "TEAM LAURA" at the MDA Great Walk in Forest Park, Springfield, MA – June 2002

On June 9, 2002, the first annual "MDA Great Walk" was held at Forest Park in Springfield, MA. The support for our daughter Laura (TEAM LAURA) was incredible.

More than 150 people participated in the walkathon event at Forest Park and about $11,000 in donations was raised for the MDA to support the programs and research to eradicate muscular dystrophies. The local chapter considered the event a great success -- though a big reason was the support for Laura. "TEAM LAURA" was by far the biggest team! We had fourty-two family members, friends, colleagues from work, and students & teachers from school join us on the walk. The support for Laura had a really big impact on her and she really appreciated it. And it made her feel good to know that in some manner she was doing something positive to help her situation, as well as others like her.

All of the donations raised by TEAM LAURA will go specifically to helping support people with Friedreich’s Ataxia. Of the $11,000 total in donations raised for the event, $5300 was contributed by TEAM LAURA.  That’s almost half! (And we had close to one third of the walkers). The Solutia donations from 55 current and former employees were more than 20% of the team total -- $1095. As a family, we were able to raise over $1400 of the total. Thanks to Mike Rosemond and Thoma Miller, Laura’s current and former teachers at Longmeadow High School and Glenbrook Middle School contributed about $400. Laura’s friend Caitlyn Sullivan and her extended family raised almost $400, the Kolb family over $600, and the Haberman family close to $1700!
