Market News -- October 2008

Mark your calendar if you have not already for our annual Fall Festival -- Sunday October 12. There will be face painting and pumpkin painting as well as a pie contest and lots of good music and fun for all. We hope to see you there.

Just as a reminder, fall weather can be a challenge and so the listing of what will be at market is our best guess as of early October. We are all very busy getting the last of our harvests in, so there will not be time to update the web in the next few weeks.

We hope to see you this week at one of our market locations.

We are a growers market supplemented with specialty processed goods. Since our space is limited at both of our locations, we do our best to offer you, the customer, a variety of high quality produce, plants, fruits, cheese, and meats as well as specialty products which nicely complement the local merchants. We appreciate the support of these local merchants in allowing our use of the parking lots at both our Loveland and Fort Collins locations. We hope you will show appreciation as well by stopping in and shopping with them as you shop with us! Thanks for your support!

Prefer to get updates in your email from us? Please email us and request to be added to our newsletter distribution list and we will keep you informed of events and availability of specific items. It may take us a little while to get this service going, so please be patient!

We look forward to seeing you at markets in 2008!

Purpose

The number of farmers' markets is growing across America as more consumers become interested in buying fresher produce and supporting local farmers. An added benefit is that well-run farmers' markets can be educational, and are always fun!

Along the Front Range of Colorado, agricultural land is being turned into housing and shopping at an alarming rate. Concerned citizens might support agriculture in general, but don't understand how they can help their local farmers or ranchers. After all, health laws prevent people from buying raw milk from dairies or individual steaks from ranches. And time and distance make it impractical to drive 30 miles even for the freshest carrots and tomatoes.

Most farmers' markets seem to be either organized as a cooperative, with each member contributing what skills they have, or as a for-profit-venue by enterprising individuals.   Sometimes, cities and counties become involved in farmers' markets by offering sites or organizational support. We are proud members of the Colorado Farmers Market Association

In Larimer County there are at least five separate Farmers' Markets. The Colorado Agricultural Marketing Cooperative ( who sponsors this web page ) offers three markets to local growers and consumers. (Emphasis on local here, as produce is restricted to Larimer, Morgan, Boulder or Weld Counties, with the exception of Western Slope fruit). The County of Larimer offers its own market which is run by its Master Gardener volunteers on Saturday mornings at the Oak Street Parking lot. Also on Saturday mornings is the Drake Road Farmers' Market. There is also a market on Thursday mornings in Estes Park, and Thursday afternoons in Berthoud
