MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING ON AUGUST 19, 1999
For a list of committee members, see our volunteers web page.
Meeting began at 7:00PM at home of Karen Helt.
In attendance:
Karen Helt
Julie Heikes
Melinda Vaughn
Kay Cordan
Chuck Panella
Jennifer Ochwat
Mark Clark
Belinda Kernaghan
Barry Odbert
Kelly Trupkiewiez
 | Remember this Sunday is the last summer
activity. Horsetooth hike. Boys who attended at least 3
activities will earn their pin. Please get names of boys
who qualified to Kay ASAP so she can order awards. |
 | Back to school nightJulie gave an
update from the meeting she attended earlier this week.
Rest of district is having their night on Sept. 2we
were unable to get the school that night so WERNER BACK
TO SCHOOL NIGHT IS WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 1. Several things
still need to happen before then:
 | Julie to talk to Principal
Chenowith to confirm that we can have a daytime
assembly with all the boys at Werner. Chuck will
come and talk to the boys about Scouting. |
 | Rick Wells had planned on
attending and supervising the activities for
boys/siblings while the parents of potential new
Cubs are working with the leaders. Julie to
confirm with Rick that he is still planning on
doing this. |
 | Webelos 2 Den Leaders to recruit
the Webelos 2 Cubs to help LEAD play activities
during the parent breakout. Need to emphasize to
the boys that they are leading/helping, not
playing themselves. Also, any Den Chiefs who are
available would be helpful as well. |
 | Chuck will create some Pack
191-specific posters (with pictures from summer
activities, etc.) for use around the school.
These will be used in conjunction with the
Garfield posters supplied by the district. |
 | Julie to confirm with Mr. C. that
we can use the posters. |
 | Need to have fliers to give to the
boys during the assembly, and fliers to give to
parents ASAP after start of the year so they know
when Back to School Night is. Parents also need
to know they will be asked to pay for the entire
years registration fees THAT NIGHT. Julie
is responsible for the fliers. |
 | Need to insure we have leader
representation from each age level. |
 | All boys should wear their
uniforms to school on September 1 to encourage
other boys to join. They should also invite their
friends to join. |
|
 | Calendar updates
 | October 3 will be Pack-wide
cleanup of our adopted Prairie Dog Meadow Natural
Area. We have committed to clean the area once a
month. Dens will be assigned rotational duty for
monthly cleanup. The how and why of this
conservation project will be a focus of the
September pack meeting. |
 | Friends of Scouting will be done
in conjunction with the Blue & Gold Dinner,
Feb. 24. We will talk at a high level about
Friends of Scouting in the December pack meeting,
and in more detail at the January pack meeting.
Information brochures will go out to parents in
January pack meeting, so they have a clear
expectation that they will be asked for completed
pledge cards at the dinner. |
 | Pack-level Pinewood Derby will be
March 25th, weigh-in March 24th. |
 | Space derby will be November pack
meeting. Kits will be handed out in September
pack meeting. |
|
 | Leaders who moved with their Cubs (i.e.
Wolf den leader is now Bear den leader) need to make
arrangements to attend the BREAKOUT SESSION ONLY of Cub
Basic training. There are several classes coming up.
Check the district calendar and call Tim Colton at
282-0587 to register. Leaders can also attend the session
at Pow Wow on October 23. Contact Karen or Julie to get a
copy of the Pow Wow information. |
 | Budget reviewProposed budget was
approved with 1 change. Newsletter budget was increased
from $50.00 to $150.00. Total budget is $5600.00 Estimate
on popcorn sales revenue is conservative. If this comes
to pass, we will reduce our reserves. We will not be able
to do this every year. Hopefully popcorn revenue will be
higher than our estimates |
 | Rick Wells will be doing a monthly
newsletter this year. Plan was to pass out to parents at
pack meeting. There would be pack meeting agenda in the
newsletter. Be sure to get any den reports or other info
to Rick in a timely manner so he can get them in the
newsletter. |
 | Program planningChuck proposed a
pack meeting agenda template. He proposed continuing the
strategy of having a featured guest or program for the
pack meetings based on last years success. Group
agreed to continue that format. Chuck would like to ~90%
of plan for pack meeting in the committee meeting the
month before (i.e. plan November pack meeting in
October). Final touches to pack meeting plan would be in
committee meeting the same month. Chuck will e-mail
everyone the generic template, and a detailed agenda for
the September pack meeting within the next week.
 | We are going to infuse some more
short skits from the dens (and leaders), as well
as more songs. They will be used as segues
between openings/announcements, awards, main
program, closing, etc. |
 | Chuck will work on the rank award
ceremonies, being better prepared and making them
more meaningful. |
 | Theme plan for the year is:
 | September
"Hey, Look Us Over" To
introduce new Cubs and parents to Pack
191, leaders, dens, activities, etc. Also
will talk about our conservation project,
why we are doing it, how it is important
to Scouting, etc. Someone from the city
will visit to talk either about the
importance of the prairie dog population
in the area, or some of the birds that
habitat there. Dens should come prepared
with a den yell. Also we will have tables
set-up and each existing den should bring
a display of some things they did last
year. |
 | October
"California Gold Rush" - Kelly
knows a person who dresses up and comes
in character as a Prospector that she
will contact for this meeting. |
 | November Space
Derby |
 | December
"Holiday Magic" |
 | January
"Discover Our Family Heritage" |
 | February Blue &
Gold Dinner/Friends of Scouting -

and Things" - Kelly knows a CSU
professor who comes with bugs
(tarantulas, hissing cockroaches, etc.)
and gives a talk on Big Bugs |

Gutter Regatta" |
 | July TBD |
 | August - TBD |

MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING ON NOVEMBER 11, 1999
For a list of committee members, see our volunteers web page.
 | The camps were discussed. The Loveland camp is full but
the Fort Collins may still have openings. There was
discussion about rewarding early registration for Tiger
Cubs by allowing them to attend the Day camp. It was
decided that was a good idea but it was probably too
late. |
 | Karen and other experienced campers gave hints about what
to bring to Webelos Mountain Camps. |
 | Karen handed out flyers about the pack summer activities.
Discussion centered around the horseback riding. It was
agreed that siblings could attend if the parent also
attended. |
 | The may pack meeting was discussed. Julie and Melinda
handed out a script of the activities. |
 | The calendar for next year was discussed. Most of the
discussion centered around the fall ramp up and
coordinator meeting activities. Ideas for back-to-school
and general advertizing of Pack 191 were discussed. Signs
and posters with pictures from cub scout activities will
be created and posted at school with permission. It was
decided that:
 | pack meetings will occur on 4th Thursdays and
committee meetings on 3rd Thursdays of the month. |
 | The pinewood derby wieght-in and race will be on
March 24 & 26 respectively. |
 | The first committee meeting will be August 19th. |

MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING ON FEBRUARY 18, 1999
For a list of committee members, see our volunteers web page.
 | Rick read the minutes of the last meeting |
 | E-mail addresses were included in the committee meeting
agenda. Rick offered to put them on the web site volunteers page. |
 | There were a few questions about the treasurer's report.
Specifically, when Mark indicated the Blue and Gold
banquet was going to pay $125 for a stage, some people
questioned the reasons for it. |
 | March pack meeting date has been changed to Wednesday,
March 24th at Werner Elementary. |
 | Since the March pack meeting will have a lot of awards
presented, it was suggested that Mark keep the extra
activities to a minimum so it won't run to late. Each den
will have a chance to do a cheer. Derby trophies and
certificates will be awarded. We may do some skits and
songs too. |
 | Someone suggested that we give the Tiger Cubs some kind
of award for good behavior at pack meetings. Way to go
Tigers! |
 | Someone suggested that we get some pack 191 patches to
sell or give to new scouts. |
 | It was suggested that dens bring their centerpieces early
to allow for setup time. |
 | Call Lisa Bunten, 225-1668, if you want to be assigned a
specific area for "Scouting for Food".
Otherwise she will assign you randomly. |
 | The pinewood derby will be held Sunday, March 21, 1:30
p.m. at Foothills Fashion Mall by Penny's in the old
Saturn store. Some additional volunteers may be needed
for the day of the race. Boys should wear uniforms to the
weight-in so their pictures can be taken. |
 | |
 | It was noted that committee meeting attendance is
dropping off for some reason. Does anyone know why??? |
 | Some suggestions were made for cub master replacement for
last year. Melinda Vaughn made the mistake of asking
Karen what was involved in being committee chairperson. I
think that means she may volunteer for that position. |
 | A lot of ideas were exchanged on possible den field
trips. Suggestions were made that leaders coordinate in
order to combine events from different dens to get the
most bang for the buck both for the boys and for the tour
guides iinvolved. |
 | Some clarification was offered on what the Webelos
overnighter and mountain camps were all about. It was
agreed that the mountain camp is something the boys
should not miss if possible. |
 | The March committee meeting date has been changed to
Wednesday, March 17 at 7:00 at Werner. Roundtable is also
changed to March 4 at 7:30 which is a change from the 2nd
to the 1st Thursday of that month due to spring break. |

MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING ON JANUARY 21, 1999
For a list of committee members, see our volunteers web page.
 | Rick read the minutes from the last meeting. |
 | We briefely looked at the budget. |
 | Karen passed around a signup sheet to get e-mail
addresses. She promised to send the list to Rick for the
web site. If you don't want your e-mail address listed on
the web page, let Rick know. |
 | Boys who are Bears this year will be eligable for the
"Webelos Outdoor Experience, May 15 this year. |
 | It was decided that "Friends of Scouting" would
be done at the January pack meeting instead of the Blue
and Gold banquet to keep the banquet focused on the boys'
bridging activities. |
 | It was agreed that there will be a $25 prize for the den
with the winning centerpiece at the Blue and Gold
banquet. We asked if Blue and Gold should be a potluck
instead of deserts. We decided on deserts. Bear dens will
help setup 1 hour early at 6:00. |
 | The pinewood derby date was officially changed to March
21. All den leaders received pinewood derby rules
handouts. |
 | It was announced that we are in desperate need of a new
Cub Master next year because Mark's son is moving up to
Boy Scouts. A parent of a younger boy is preferred to
give the pack more continuity. |
 | Other committee positions will also be vacated next year,
most notably Karen's committee chairman position.
Trainees were encouraged to apply now so they Karen can
pass on what she learned the hard way. |
 | Some details of the summer camps were discussed. Again,
current Bear scouts will be eligable for Webelos summer
camps. |

MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING ON DECEMBER 10, 1999
For a list of committee members, see our volunteers web page.
We met one week early this month like last month because the

back by end of January. Den leaders will need to turn in
an estimate of number of hours of service projects their
boys did for 1998. |
 | Pinewood derby cars will be handed out at the December
pack meeting. We learned at the roundtable meeting that
the 1999 pinewood derby rules will be the same as 1998 rules which I
added to this web site for viewing. |
 | We didn't have the scheduled service project discussion
because there weren't enough attendees. I guess we will
postpone that discussion until next week when we meet at
Werner once again. |
 | We were reminded at the roundtable that leaders need to
renew their "Youth Protection" training every
two years. If you haven't done it and need it, here's
your opportunity in January: |
January 21, Thursday at 7pm
Church at corner of Stover & Swallow
