CSU-PUEBLO FM INTERNS READY TO HELP

What is the CSU-Pueblo FM Internship Program About?

The Facilities Management and Technology Studies (FMTS) program at the Colorado State University-Pueblo (CSU-Pueblo) administers a formalized FM internship program.  Studies show that students who work during their time at school are generally better students with higher GPA’s than those who do not work.  In addition, internships are a primary factor in securing employment after the student’s graduation.  You can help advance our profession by providing meaningful internship opportunities to students wishing to gain experience in the FM world.  As an added incentive, note that CSU-Pueblo’s FMTS program is officially recognized for excellence by IFMA.

What Can CSU-Pueblo FMTS Interns Do for Me?

Depending on their classification (sophomore, junior, etc) interns can help complete projects related to:

·        Operational or strategic planning

·        Project development, design, estimating and/or management

·        Program review, coordination and/or management

·        Interior space planning, furnishing, utilization and management

·        Facility auditing and/or inventory management

·        Facilities layout, CAFM operation and CAD drawing

·        Facilities systems operations and management

·        Facilities administration

·        Real Estate and property issues

·        Environmental, health and safety issues

Ideally, the intern will be exposed to as many aspects of facility management as practicable.

What Information Should I be Ready to Provide?

Specific job information provided to potential interns should include:

·        A brief job description (include a closing date so you can easily know how many students are responding).  Project type work is usually best for interns.

·        Desired qualifications (Remember: these are students who come with varying degrees of training and/or experience)

·        Anticipated wage (may be in a range dependent on skills, experience, etc.)

·        Anticipated work schedule (may be negotiable)

·        Date(s), time(s) and location preferred for interviewing (if desired)

·        Special instructions (“mail resumes to…”, etc.)

·        Information about your company including contact names and numbers

·        Other requirements

Remember: hiring a CSU-Pueblo intern does not obligate you to hire the intern after graduation.

Will My Intern Receive a Grade?

Yes.  The grade is based on a combination of documented work activities and a brief employer evaluation.  Students participating in an internship keep a record of their accomplishments.  This record may include reports, research papers, computer programs, CAD drawings, presentations or other such products of their labor.  If the internship does not lend itself to the compilation of a record of accomplishments, then the student keeps an activities journal.

A faculty sponsor monitors the progress of the student and the worth of the internship by regularly contacting the employer and the student during the internship.  Personal contact is preferred but telephonic contact is acceptable.

At the end of the internship, the employer evaluates the intern’s performance in the following areas:

·        COMPETENCE: Did the intern get off to a fast start; quickly become productive and demonstrate good job skills?

¨      Please list the intern’s most exceptional job skills

¨      Please list job skills for which the intern needed better preparation

·        WORK HABITS: Did the intern put in an “honest day’s work”; show up on time and where required; take pride in and produce quality work; and put forth a maximum effort?

·        “FIT” WITH THE COMPANY CULTURE: Did the intern display a responsible, positive attitude; get along well with fellow employees and supervisor(s); and exhibit honesty, respect and other characteristics of an “ideal” employee?
