  • December 1st, 2007Fun at the Wild Wet FestLaura Joice

Flying out of Colorado, on a plane leaving two hours later than scheduled, we arrived in a humid Arizona. Thinking about playing in mud weather and happy that it's still warmer than it was back in Colorado by far! =)

The Players who made it out were Kelly Dalgetty, Ashley Jarvis, Tamera Joice, and myself. Looking at what appeared to be a flooded Scottsdale we arrived at the park off of Princess Dr. at a Pitch which had sucked all the water underground and looking ready to play on!

Being a small group we traveled as whores but proved our attitude and team spirit by representing Ft. Collins Phoenix by wearing flames on our legs. Which consequently makes finding our girls in the photos much easier. ;) Check us out.

We teamed up with Durango's finest, the Fallen Angels, who even took the extra step of adding us to their roster and giving us wrist bands for the after party. These girls have great personalities and played strong alongside us and a few other whores and newbies and we are thankful for the opportunity to play with them.

The first game was played against Tucson Lightning and with so many new players on the team and the motley crew which made up the team, the game did not start off with people communicating as well but this was short lived and improvements began right into the second half.

The 2nd game was against the Gypsies who also wore very similar blue and white shirts to the Fallen Angel shirts. So we borrowed Green and White shirts from the Barbarians Denver Mens team. We played maybe 5 minutes before we were slammed with lightning and marble sized raindrops. Running to our cars we lost a good 1/2 hour, and as the ran settled we lost another 1/2 hour waiting for the fields to drain. Then we waited another 1/2 hour because all the other fields were draining out onto our pitch. Then the sun popped it's head out for a short time and we began play.

This game we lost as well against a group of women who played a bit rougher than our team did, but we held our own. They certainly seemed pissed off that we fought back as much as we did. The game was pretty fair in point spread until near the end when the Slots found a weak spot and kept breaking through.

By the third game both the opponents team and our team had sat waiting in the cold rain allowing our muscles to tighten. Due to this the other team requested a boat race in place of the game. The fallen angels still wanting to be a bit more competitive agreed to a boat race along side a foot race. We threw in the top 5 racers and chuggers and came out on top. Finally a game we did win!

Afterward our girls and theirs separated, with Phoenix girls resigning to no more rugby matches we were ready to go back to the hotel. We took a walk around the field one last time and found ourselves be asked to whore one last Rugby game. We played against the local women's team the Lady Blues. Our team I did not catch their name but the team played with Red Jersey's. Although it was apparent the Lady Blues were playing on a higher skill level, our girls definitely gave a great game and played with a lot of heart. It was great to get a third game in as the sun was setting with the Arizona mountains fading into the shadows.

At the after party we dressed up as Super Mario Bros. and friends. Keith our coach was Mario and I played Luigi. Ashley was the Piranha Plant shooting red plastic street hockey balls at everyone. Causing more fun as everyone in turn shot them at each other. Kelley was Toad the humanoid mushroom with a spotted red and white hat. Tamera was Princess Peach all decked in her fluffy pink dress and 8-bit looking blond hair.

All in all, everything went well, we all had fun, and I hope to see the rest of you out there next year. =)

  • November 4th, 2007Scrimmage with Mines and Lady HarlequinsLaura Joice

Today's game was a great way to end the fall season. We played a combined side with our old buddies the Colorado School of Mines against the very fun, Lady Harlequins who also filled out their side with a couple great lady's from Boulder Babes and Black Ice.

Our team started with speed and aggression and ran right over the other team and quickly made a try. Unfortunately, they in turn did the same to us... The first half did not play out so neatly as we'd hope. Grabbing a couple quick picks, and a couple of outside tries, they scored a total of 5 times in the first half. We pulled ourselves back together for the rest of the games, and began putting out a strong defense with an aggressive offense. In the second half we fought our way to making two more scores and ended the game at 6 tries to 4, their win.

In our second game though we continued to show an aggressive defense, and while continuing to drive forward, we were able to keep pressure on and pulled out with a final score and win of 2 tries to 1.

For our 3rd half we honored our guests by providing more than enough beer over what everyone could handle :) and a free taco bar given by that nights host bar, The Armadillo. The food was great and the scene was awesome. Together we enjoyed some good ol' rugby traditions such as singing loud and obnoxiously about sex and beer. We even got our captains and coaches together to hand out awards to our Players of the Match.

Man of the Match from our team goes to Ashley Jarvis for playing with her whole heart the entire game, and injecting a needed pace into our attacks throughout the matches.

  • July 18th, 2007Summer 7s with Black IceLaura Joice

We're half way through the season and our new girls are now playing rough enough to enjoy the bumps and bruises that comes with the game of Rugby. Ice 'em up ladies I expect to see you out there next Wednesday! =)

We played Black Ice A in our first match and Black Ice B in our second. A few of our girls also whored on with the Harlequins to once again play the Black Ice. In the first match we lost 6-1. In the first half Black Ice made 2 quick tries easily breaking through our line of defense. After that we cleaned up quite a bit and all our forwards did a great job in physically driving the ball up field carrying multiple bodies with them. =) Kudos also to Vanessa for her continuous attempts to stop the other team from scoring as often as they could have. Kudos to Lily for her break away score and for taking a brutal slam to her shin knocking her out for the rest of the day.

Our second game we tied 3-3 but put in better efforts in aggressively going for the ball and for tackles. Unfortunately a few missed tackles allowed them the opportunity to score but due to a strong defense we were able to force errors on their part and turn over the ball. Kudos to Kathy and Tuffi for their hard hits, I hope you heal nicely ladies and once again to Kathy for trying to tackle one girl with her face. And once again to Vanessa, our captain, for making a good portion of our scores!

Finally thanks goes out again to our whores, Special thanks to the Babes for their support through both games.

    Team turn out:

Vanessa, Lily, Kathy, Sharie, Tuffi, and Alena(Sorry if I spelled your name wrong.)

Sorry I couldn't play ladies, but I'm trying to work out my knee for next week I promise.

  • July 11th, 2007Summer 7 ContinuesLaura Joice

We fought hard today and played two rough games. Our first match was against Cherry Creek High School and second was against the Boulder Babes. Against Cherry Creek we played multi-colored with a motley crew; we had one member out sick, two on vacation, two came late, and myself injured later on after only a few minutes of play. Thanks goes out to our whore, Farley, Bree, Kate, and Katie. (If I missed you I apologize I didn't get a chance to meet you, but still your help was appreciated.)

We lost 4-3 in a match of back and forth scoring. They played well and took advantage of our lines as we had a hard time staying flat and they found lots of holes. We had great tackles though and won almost every scrum if not all of them. Kudos goes to Lily for her 40 meter run and score, as well to Vanessa for scoring twice in her own 40 meter runs.

Against the Babes we had a tough match and lost but still held our own. We staggered a little in the first half but we played a strong defensive line and kudos to Sharie for her awesome tackles. And As tired as our girls were it helped to see the Babes bent over in exhaustion while we still stood straight. The Babes though did play a great game taking advantage and creating holes over and over again. Good Job Babes.

We had a couple more girls join our team today.

    Sharie from UNC

    Andy from CSU

Todays team also consisted of Vanessa, Lily, Tuffi, and myself (Laura).

  • June 27th, 2007Summer 7s on a Cloudy DayLaura Joice

Gorgeous weather today, cloudy and cool. Today we won our first match in sevens!=)

We played our first game against the Black Ice and our second against the Glendale Olde Girls. We won 2-0 against the Black Ice. We were able to come together and form a strong line allowing us to capitalize on overloads while maintaining a strong defensive strategy. The Black Ice also did very well giving us a fight the whole way through.

The Olde Girls in turn beat us 4-0. I hear this is a good news as they've been hurdling over the other teams as well. Apparently we put up a good fight and if we had used aggressive behavior when it came to grabbing that ball we might have had a much better chance at preventing their break aways. Our defense was strong but our offense needed work. Next time Glendale, next time... ;).

We also had a full team today, GO FOCO!!!

    Team turn out:

    Vanessa,Lily,Brittany - CSU

    Kathy & Laura - FCWR

And two more new additions to FCWR!!!!

Megan & Tuffy..... you girls were awesome out there!!!

I don't know a single person who didn't hold their own, Great Job ladies.

And once again, thanks goes out to all of our beautiful whores!

    Cheers!
