After experiments with bringing in a variety of outside bands, we've found that our members prefer us to concentrate on fostering our abundant local talent. And what talent it is! This area of Colorado is home to the amazing Poudre River Irregulars, one of the best New Orleans style jazz bands in the country. For much more about them – history, musician bios, pictures, music samples, ordering their CDs – see their website at www.prijb.com (in case you're wondering, the "prijb" part stands for Poudre River Irregulars Jazz Band). The Irregulars have a long-standing arrangement to play from 4 to 7 pm on the first Friday of every month at Avogadro's Number (Avo's), a friendly restaurant/bar at 605 S. Mason near the campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins. These informal concerts always draw a large crowd, often standing-room-only, and our Society members help with logistics and ticket-taking. In addition, we sometimes sponsor guest musicians who add variety to the band's regular gigs or occasionally hold separate concerts, usually with one or more of our local band members. And for several years now, we've been sponsoring an annual February concert at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center featuring Denver's wonderful Queen City Jazz Band. Want to attend our events? Dates and times for the Poudre River Irregulars' gigs, including their First Friday concerts at Avo's, are on the Gigs page of their website. We publicize guest musicians and special concerts to our members through our newsletter and other mailings, as well as a variety of public announcements, including posting on this website. For further information about any of these jazz events, feel free to phone Jeanne Peterson, our newsletter editor, at (970) 498-8616, or email us at . |
