Besides sponsoring live music, the Northern Colorado Traditional Jazz Society does its best to encourage northern Colorado jazz musicians. Here are links or other contact information for jazz groups in our area, and for other Colorado jazz societies:

Traditional Jazz
Poudre River Irregulars   This excellent New Orleans style jazz band, one of the best in the country, now has two popular CDs, which you can order at their web site. Our Society has a long-standing relationship with this group – for instance, we help them with things like fund raising and publicity, and their leader, Bob Cooke, sits on our board of directors.

Riverside Ramblers Dixieland Jazz Band   Based in Estes Park, CO, this 8-piece band has been playing classic Dixieland-style music since 1992 and is often featured in area events. For info, contact Paul Saunders at 970-586-6028 or e-mail .

Stover Street Stompers   This enthusiastic Dixieland band is a project of the Fort Collins First United Methodist Church (on Stover Street) and plays at worship services and community events in the area. Their music includes traditional hymns, spirituals, and gospel songs. For info, contact the church at 970-482-2436 or e-mail John Allum at .

Stars & Garters   A fun band whose repertoire includes singalongs and honkytonk ragtime. For info, contact Ted Turner at .


Big Band / Swing
FortJazz Big Band   This full-size big band offers the dance band sound of the Big Band Era with arrangements of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, and so on. Fort Collins trumpeter Mark Manges is the leader. For info, contact the band's manager, Kip Scholl, at 970-416-1414.

Glenn Shull Big Band   A variable-size ensemble, ranging from a trio up to a 12-piece band with vocalist, that primarily plays the standard dance-band repertoire. For info, contact Genn Shull at 970-223-4053.


Contemporary Jazz
Mark Sloniker   This popular and prolific Fort Collins pianist/composer and his group play sophisticated jazz several nights a week with a variety of guest musicians, from newcomers to seasoned pros.

JJQ - The Just Jazz Quintet   Five excellent local-area musicians who love and play jazz from the mainstream, straight-ahead repertoire, from bop to fusion.

Ethos West Chamber Orchestra   This innovative ensemble performs chamber music of all styles and periods, from renaissance and baroque to jazz, third-stream, and world music. Ron Holleman is the musical director and conductor.

Touch of Jazz   A mainstream jazz quartet based in Loveland and led by trumpeter Gil Garcia (other groups with the same basic personnel are Touch of Dixie and Touch of Brass). For info, contact Gil Garcia at 970-669-3261 or .


Local Jazz Media
KRFC 88.9 FM   "Homegrown radio for northern Colorado." This community station plays a lot of jazz, including occasional live broadcasts of local performers at noon (Live@Lunch) and regular jazz programs hosted by Gene Abkarian (Mountain Standards Time), Jim Dailey (Just Jazz), Brian Keefe (Jazzalicious), and Peter Poses (Midnight Soundz of Surprize). Jazz Societies
Boulder Friends of Jazz   This sister society concentrates on traditional jazz and sponsors a jam session the first Sunday of each month; see their website for details.

Denver Jazz Club   This long-time traditional jazz society sponsors a concert featuring guest musicians on the third Sunday of each month.

Pikes Peak Jazz and Swing Society   This Colorado Springs society supports both traditional and mainstream jazz and sponsors a concert featuring guest musicians on the second Sunday of each month. (Their website also includes a page of useful local and national links.)
